Chuan Ji Bakery - traditional Hainanese bakery and restaurant

Tucked in the corner of a rather unkept and perhaps sleazy mall out of town, the Chuan Ji Bakery is a gem of a find. Serving traditional Hainanese food, with staples like beef stew, pork chop, kopi and toast with butter-kaya, they also have some Peranakan styled desserts like ondek-ondek, kueh kosui.

Photographed with the Leica S3 and Summarit-S 35/f.2,5 ASPH CS lens. Converted to BW and x-pan crop applied in PS.

The bakery traces its roots back to a 100 year old recipe of the current owner's grandmother, famous for its baked goods, especially the mooncakes. Not willing to let the recipe disappear from the map, the current owner quit his job as a mechanical engineer, to carry on the tradition with his mother.
