The Hive, NTU

The Hive is an interesting building with interesting architecture located in NTU. The building serves as a learning hub, with tutorial rooms, lecture theatres as well as study rooms for the students at the university.

On approach from the car park, as we arrived at about 7 pm. The building looms a towering 12 stories, though the floor labelling is curious. From this entry, the level is Basement 5, and the top of the building is level 7. The top floors have more floor area than the lower ones, creating this somewhat lopsided, top heavy look to the building

The walls on the interior and exterior look like bare concrete with exposed services. This photograph of the interior, featuring the full height atrium was taken at level 2 looking into the inner courtyard.

The atrium has an organic feel to it, and is flanked by rooms where work and study can take place. While we were there in the evening, some of the rooms were booked by students for study, though we could see that some of them were playing computer games.

The front of the building, so to speak. It was about 8pm when we left.

The building was designed by Thomas Heatherwick and completed in 2015 at a cost of some SGD 45 million. The building is known as "dim sum basket" building due to its likeness to the steamers for dim sum.

Here is the Architectural Review article on the building. I photographed the series with the Fujifilm GFX 50 S II and the GF 20-35 ultra wide angle zoom lens.
