Tong Ah at Keong Saik

 

Keong Saik Road used to be a vibrant red-light area in the 1960, but in the 1990s the place was gentrified and now sports many boutique hotels, cafes and restaurants. The buildings have conservation status awarded by URA and comprise of mainly two and three storey shop houses along the street in transitional, late and art deco architectural styles.

The rather famous coffee joint known as Tong Ah, used to occupy this three storey red and white building in this interesting architecture style. Tong Ah made its name as one of the most famous purveyors of local Nanyang kopi with crispy kaya toasts. They have moved out of this building, but their name still remains together with the new tenant Potato Head. Tong Ah has moved to another shop further down the street.
