Tanglin Halt

A quick and somewhat poignant look at Tanglin Halt hawker centre and market which is scheduled for demolition to make way for more high rise. This development was completed between 1962 and 1963 as one of the five initial districts within Queenstown, Singapore’s first satellite estate — have also become an iconic image.

Tanglin Halt is interesting as there are two hawker centre areas. Built before the Hawker Centre era, these offer a variety of cooked food. This single story building house one of the food centres, and shares the roof with the market. In the background, the typical Singapore high rise apartment buildings. A contrast of new and old. But not for long, when Tanglin Halt goes, it will be new with the new.

Adjacent this food centre is a U shaped row of two storey shop houses.

And across the road, is the Tanglin Halt hawker centre. From the sky, the roof looks like three hexagonal pods connected to each other and houses several famous hawkers. Seen below one of the stalls open, and some diners having their evening meal. These days, many of the stores are closed in the evenings.

The space next to this is an open air amphitheater, with theater styled seating. Sometimes, outdoor movie screenings, and stage performances are held.

Though, in recent times, it has been quite empty, and a place for old friends to catch up with each other.

Also surrounding this food centre, are three rows of double storey shop houses.
