Tale of two bicycle shops

Cycling is fast becoming, or some say has already become, an extremely popular sport in Singapore. Especially in 2020, during the lockdown and movement restrictions due to the pandemic, bicycle shops have seen huge increases in business. Many bikes now sport a waiting list, some very long. I hear that the wait list for a new Brompton is now up to a year. And for top level bikes like Pinarello and Trek, the time one needs to wait for a delivery is not much better.

The first is a typical high end bicycle shop. Cycleworx is the authorized dealer for Pinarello in Singapore, and specializing in the high end. Air-conditioned comfort, in a clean, modern light industrial building. The wares are nicely displayed. The work area for the mechanic owners are clean and neat. And in contrast, an old school bicycle shop, peddling (pedaling ? SIC) low end bicycles in a typical setting of a HDB residential block. This shop is in the Boon Keng area. Hasselblad H3D-39 HC 2.8/80.

Somewhat haphazardly, the typical look of the parking bay at a HDB block in Skyville. Most owners of high end bicycles keep their bicycles in their flats, fearing theft. The curious thing about Singapore is that though we are a very low crime country, bicycle thefts are relatively common. And a good bicycle parked outside, even when locked can go missing easily.
