The Cathay: walkabout

The Cathay Building is the first sky scraper in Singapore. Standing at  83.5m from Dhoby Ghaut ground level entrance to the top of the water tower, it was the highest building in Singapore and South East Asia in 1939 when it opened.  The building was designed by British architect Frank W Brewer. The building consisted of the Cathay Cinema, a restaurant and a dance hall, as well as a roof garden and a residential complex. The building was redeveloped in 2000 and reopened in 2006. It retained the original art-deco façade of the 1939 and combined together with a modern-day design by Paul Tange of Tange Associates Japan and RDC Architects. It currently houses the Cathay Cineplex, as well as shopping and eateries. After writing this about the building, I am reminded that I have no photographs of the actual building and its unique architecture. Will return for that at a later date.
