Wah Kee Prawn Noodle

A special portrait today, the power couple who helm and run Wah Kee Prawn Noodles for the last decades! I am not sure when they took over from the stall, but they are the second generation owners. The first generation business started as a push cart hawker in Rangoon Road, circa 1951. And were the pioneers of the big prawn version. Their current location is operated by this couple, as second generation owners. The stall is still in operation in Pek Kio Market and Food Centre. The gentleman told me that when the business began in 1951, a bowl of big prawn noodle was sold at 20cents! Today, the big prawn noodles sell for $10, but I do recommend the $15 version for larger, more succulent prawns. Expensive? Perhaps. But IMHO, the best tasting prawn noodles in town. The broth is more similar to the French Bouillabaisse than any other prawn noodle soup.

The current owners are as photographed. The mild mannered husband with his wife, the feisty dragon lady. I managed to catch them relaxing at the store, and in a good mood. They have been closed for a couple of months, since Chinese New Year, and set to re-open soon. Both of them are in the 80s and recently just had taken their COVID-19 vaccine, and recovering. Quite unusual to catch both of them relaxed, chatty and in a very good mood.
